TikTok is launching new tool that will help creators label AI content on the app
TikTok announced on Tuesday its latest initiative aimed at combatting misinformation. The social media platform will introduce a new tool to assist content creators in identifying AI-generated content they produce.
In an official statement, TikTok outlined the purpose of this tool, which will facilitate creators' compliance with the company's existing AI policy. This policy mandates that all manipulated content depicting realistic scenes must be clearly labeled to indicate that they are either fake or altered.
TikTok's strict stance extends to deepfake content—videos and images generated or manipulated by artificial intelligence—that misleads users about real-world events. The platform explicitly prohibits deepfakes involving private individuals and minors. However, it permits altered images of public figures in certain contexts, such as for artistic and educational purposes.
In addition to this tool, TikTok also revealed plans to introduce an "AI-generated" label this week. This label will be applied to content detected as edited or created by AI. Furthermore, the platform intends to rename effects within the app that utilize AI, ensuring they explicitly include "AI" in their names and labels.
This move by TikTok reflects growing concerns about the impact of the AI arms race on misinformation. Authorities, including the European Union, have been urging online platforms to intensify their efforts in countering false information, which includes labeling text, photos, and other content generated by artificial intelligence.
